Why consider home emergency insurance cover?
Insuring your home against anything that may go wrong may involve a little thought. It may, of course, be important to think about traditional buildings and contents insurance but how might this help if something happened that needed to be dealt with urgently? To protect yourself from this kind of incident you may also want to think about home emergency insurance cover (also known as domestic emergency insurance).
The truth is that not all home insurance claims are straightforward. Sometimes things go wrong with no notice and they might put you in a difficult or even risky situation. Your home insurance policy may not be set up to help you deal with this – it may be based around dealing with the aftermath of an emergency (and only if any damage is done) and not with the emergency itself.
Home emergency insurance cover is generally based on typically giving assistance if you have:
- a situation that happens suddenly and that needs urgent action;
- a problem that may pose a risk to you or the people that live in your home;
- an issue that may compromise the safety of your home;
- an incident that deprives you of essential services.
The domestic emergency cover you may be given depends on the policy you take out but, typically, you may be given protection against:
- problems with your plumbing, drains, primary heating system and mains services supplies;
- issues that cause problems with your security at home including loss of keys;
- boiler inspections and services;
- infestations by pests;
- times when you may be told to leave your home because an emergency situation has made it uninhabitable.
As you probably already realise an emergency situation may rarely occur at a convenient time. One of the primary benefits of home emergency insurance cover is the fact that it may protect your own costs by giving you cover that your standard home insurance cannot deal with. This kind of policy isn’t meant to replace your home policy; it is meant to work with it to give more complete cover.
Let’s say that you wake up on a Bank Holiday weekend in the middle of winter and your boiler has stopped working. You have no heating and no hot water and three days to wait before the world goes back to normal working hours and standard call-out charges.
Your home insurance policy may be no use to you now if it doesn’t give any emergency benefits. This may mean that you have to bite the bullet and pay extra call out charges to get a tradesman to come out and fix your boiler out of your own pocket. That is, of course, if you are able to find one who is free to come out in the first place.
Home emergency insurance cover might just make things easier. This kind of policy typically comes with a 24 hour helpline that you call to discuss your problem. If you are covered for this then your insurance company is there to arrange for someone to come out for you immediately. This may make it easier to get you a reputable tradesman at short notice and at no cost.
