What is home emergency insurance?
Getting the right levels of insurance cover for your home may not just involve taking out buildings and contents cover. For some, full protection for the place in which they live may also include home emergency insurance cover as well. What is this kind of insurance and why might it be useful?
Home emergency insurance is like standard home insurance in a way in that it is designed to help you financially and practically if something goes wrong. However, it is complementary to your home insurance. Unlike other policies, this kind of cover may be more useful if you have an emergency or if something goes wrong that is out of the ordinary or that needs dealing with immediately.
The benefits of taking out home emergency cover may well vary from policy to policy. Typically domestic emergency insurance cover may, for example, include:
- problems with mains power supplies;
- problems with plumbing and drains;
- problems with your main central heating system;
- problems when you lose your keys;
- problems with home security;
- problems with pest infestations;
- problems where it is dangerous to stay in your home until the situation is made good or the problem is solved;
- annual boiler services/inspections.
Not all policies necessarily offer this complete range of benefits but many people won’t need them all in any case. Some people may, for example, find that a basic home emergency policy gives them all the benefits they need. Others prefer to go for more comprehensive cover to include more options. What you choose may really depend on those problems that you feel may be an issue for you if something were to go wrong.
Although your standard home policy may help if you have problems of this type they may not be much use to you on an immediate basis. This kind of home emergency insurance is designed to help you deal with certain problems as they happen.
This may be useful, for example, if something happens on an emergency basis that may:
- be a health risk;
- need sorting out immediately to make your home secure;
- need dealing with immediately to stop damage getting worse or to prevent further damage;
- require main services to be restored immediately;
- need you to move out of your home on an immediate basis to prevent you being harmed or hurt.
For many home emergency cover is something they like to have as well as their regular home insurance policy. There are incidents where you may need to pay part/all of the costs that come with a problem even with a standard buildings and contents policy in place. Domestic emergency cover may help seal the gaps and make it a lot easier to cope if something unexpected happens at an inconvenient time.
Bear in mind that home emergency insurance isn’t meant to replace other types of home insurance you may have or may be thinking about taking out. A policy that offers emergency benefits does just that – it helps you cope better with emergencies rather than everyday problems.
