Home Emergency Cover

My Home Emergency Cover – domestic emergencies like burst pipes, drain problems or broken windows can happen at any time. Finding a tradesman and the money to pay for the repai isn;t a problem with home emergency cover

What are the benefits of home emergency protection?

Have you ever thought about what happens if you have a problem in your home that is more of an emergency than a general maintenance or breakdown issue? You may think that you are able to cover the costs involved with your general home insurance policy but this may not be the case. Many urgent problems may be better dealt with specially designed home emergency protection.

This kind of insurance may be useful if something out of the ordinary goes wrong. Unlike your regular house insurance this cover is targeted at helping you deal with emergencies as and when they arise. Typical types of emergency that may be covered with this kind of policy include problems with:

  • central heating or primary heating;
  • plumbing; drains;
  • supply of mains services;
  • loss of keys and home security;
  • having to move out of your home because it is considered to be uninhabitable;
  • pest infestations;
  • boiler service or inspection.

Your general home policy, on the other hand, may be more geared towards standard problems and may not be able to deal with emergencies at all. Generally, building and contents insurance is designed to be reactive (unless it happens to include emergency cover). Home emergency protection may be more proactive. So, what does this actually mean?

If you’ve ever had to make a standard home insurance claim then you probably already know that this is usually done on the basis of getting compensation for something that has gone wrong. So, for example, if a radiator springs a leak and damages the carpet in your kitchen, then you might make a claim to get your costs back.

But, your home policy may not be able to help you pay for the tradesman you had to get out to repair the problem. It may also have to pay out a lot more if you find it hard to get things sorted as more damage may be done. This may leave both you and your insurance provider out of pocket.

Home emergency protection, however, may make things easier and cheaper to deal with. This kind of policy is more designed to get you immediate help rather than leaving you to wait and see what damage has been done or giving you the responsibility of finding someone to fix the problem out of your own pocket.

So, for example, with domestic emergency protection a quick call to your insurance provider’s helpline may help you get a plumber or an engineer out on an emergency basis to deal with the problem. This may just be a
temporary fix or a repair. Either way, it may help minimise damage, reduce its costs and save you from having to pay high out of hours call out fees.

One of the biggest benefits that many people find with home emergency protection is the fact that policies give you 24 hour cover. The funny thing is that emergencies tend to happen at the most inconvenient times (usually in the evening, the middle of the night, at weekends or on Bank Holidays!) when you may not easily be able to find the help you may need at an affordable cost.
